Elegant, powerful and classic: all words that describe the 2009 Armani Privé collection, the couture label of the Armani Empire. Almost entirely set in tones of black and white with shades of gray, the clothes evoked the timelessness and simplicity that have always charactized Armani.
The chic and body-lengthening pantsuits that are de rigeur at Armani are sure not to cause any surprises to the brand's loyal base. At the same time, it was hard not to feel that the collection was a bit dated. The big bow ties and pleated, ankle-showing pants had a distinctly 80's mentality, despite the patina of modernity that runway shows impart.
With some exceptions, the dresses, set mainly in black, had a sort of heavy feel with many even covering the shoulders and arms. This sort of prim-and-porper feel will be lauded by some, but ultimately there was little innovation or newness that characterized early Armani when he empowered women with his tailored suits.
