While we might have suspected that the one of a kind gown designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Anna Wintour to wear at the Met Costume Gala might be a preview of the Chanel Couture collection, shown yesterday at the Grand Palais in Paris, little could we have known that Wintour's influence would pervade so deeply into the illustrious designer's mind.
Wintour's spirit was not-so-subtly seen in the 'bob' haircuts of the Chanel models, the chinchilla fur details on jackets and the generally mod attitude of the show.
The pipe details on many of dresses, a theme throughout the collection, gave off sort of protective, almost passive-aggressive feeling of self-defense. Indeed, the clothes did not lend themselves to a sort of young, joyful bohemian air, sometimes looking like exquisite armor for a powerful, domineering woman.
At times, the effect was brilliantly done as seen in a silvery mini-sheath dress, but mostly the creations looked as bizarre and unforgivable as the space-invader dress Wintour herself donned not long ago.
