Elie Saab stated that the inspiration for his Fall 2009 collection came from the Sistine Chapel. To that effect, there was certainly a renaissance classicism in the flowing chiffon goddess gowns for which Saab is so celebrated. Instead of Romanesque classicism, though, the collection had a very rococo feel with giant bows and bunched up fabric that had the appearance of delicate lilys, lending volume and sophistication to many of the dresses.
It also seemed like Saab had Marie Antoinette on the mind, her spirit present in the big teased hair and most manifest in the elaborate, poofy wedding gown, the last piece of the show. One could imagine the late queen at home in many of the outfits, especially the long, graceful ball gowns that were the show's focal point.
In all, the collection was not only artful, but wearable. Any woman who would afford an Elie Saab couture dress would surely have many options when looking for the perfect 'occasion' outfit.
