Images from Naomi Campbell's photoshoot in the much-hyped Vogue Italia issue with all black models have been posted on the magazine's website.
Don't expect, however, to admire the shoot because of the beautiful designer clothing, but rather the lack thereof. Naomi was shot in a variety of lush and luxurious surroundings that gave the impression of a fairytale paradise. The emphasis was clearly on Campbell and the beauty of the human body. The images, shot by Steven Meisel, were visually stunning, looking more like painted masterpieces than photography.
Even the way the images are presented on the Vogue Italia website is remarkably innovative and artistic. There is a literal mobility to the shots: besides zooming out to give us the full image, some of the elements actually move to create a visual story. In one image of Naomi on a rococo bed surrounded by fruit and rose petals, we actually see some of the petals fall gracefully onto the bed. This is done in a manner that gives an added dimension of vitality to the photographs without taking away any artistic purity.
The shoot proves beyond any resonable doubt two important things: Vogue Italia is way ahead of the curve and Naomi Campbell is still the queen.
