Balenciaga N’ Slash

Balenciaga N’ Slash
Balenciaga N’ Slash

“It’s like in your room, on campus. It’s about how girls become themselves.”

These word spoken by fashion “it-boy” Nicolas Ghesquière to Style.com’s Sarah Mower right before Suvi, Raquel, Gemma, and Catherine McNeil sauntered down Balenciaga’s Fall ‘07 runway in those now infamous khaki jodphurs and tight little school-boy jackets.

The collection was young, inspiring, and with the help of TopShop, JCrew, and Urban Outfitters - any woman with a little bit of creativity and a fashion magazine in hand could’ve successfully replicated a few of the stellar looks without having to break the bank.

Ms. Mower thought so to:

“When all’s said, the real cleverness of this show wasn’t even in its impressive levels of intellect or craft: It’s in the fact that so many women will be able to reach in, grab a jacket or a towering pair of Balenciaga heels, and make them work with whatever else they own.”

Fast forward to Spring ‘08 and it’s head-to-toe floral ensembles with woven-leather knee-high gladiator boots: Beautiful, fashion-forward, but totally unwearable, and kind of disappointing: Where am I suppose to find a decent sculpted warrior suit for next season? Oh yeah, that’s the point!

Apparently, all of the fashion editors have gotten the memo to. You know, the one that says Mr. Ghesquière looks may not under any circumstance be taken apart. Every editorial I’ve seen thus far - for the most part- where the immaculately stitched dresses have been featured has been styled the same way: model with minimal makeup and simple hair; letting the bold pieces take the spotlight.

That is until I saw the Samira Nasr styled edit in the current issue of Elle magazine. The look is still whole, but the top hat and spectacles makes the semi-couture outfit feel very bohemian, very rock n’ roll, very Slash from Guns N’ Roses.

Which leads me to my final thought:

Although her sister is the official Balenciaga muse, Lou Doillon would look genius in this. After all, she does have a thing for the Artful Dodger

Samira Nasr totally has a GNR tape in her sock drawer... or maybe that's just me. Jokes aside, rock chic is by far my favorite style and I love how Nasr fit gladiator heels into the vibe.
