Pageant Preparation -Part I

Soren Kierkegard said, "To dare is to lose oneself momentarily, not to dare is to lose oneself." This year I've decided not to lose myself and so I entered the 2008 Mrs. Michigan United States pageant. I was selected as Mrs. Southeastern Michigan and the preparation began.
I'd like to share with you some of the preparation that takes place to participate in a state pageant of a national pageant system. There is a popular misconception that pageants are just about choosing the most beautiful and talented delegate. I wish it were that easy! Today's pageants are a whole other ball game. Not only does one have to be physically attractive, but intelligent, articulate and charismatic. One also has to have "national pageant potential." In lieu of talent, these days: one must demonstrate commitment to a cause which she will champion throughout the year of her reign if selected as queen. She must be able to describe the importance of her platform, who it will benefit and why. The platform must be sufficiently relevant and have broad appeal. Delegate's demonstrate many qualities when selecting a platform: diversity, creativity, vulnerability, and leadership potential. The platform demonstrates the heart of the contestants personality.
