Superwoman, Not!05/23/2008 01:11 AM | Superwoman, Not!
Not Superwoman
Current mood: content

Women are under tremendous pressure these days. Pressure not only to be productive citizens, mothers and wives. But also to be business executives, CEOs of fortune 500 companies, airline pilots and brain surgeons. Oh, don't let me forget rocket scientists. Women are under so much pressure to compete with and out do men that I think we have sometimes forgotten how to be just who we are.

Young ladies used to be taught marketable and self esteem building skills in home economics class. Skills such as sewing, knitting and crocheting, and heavens to betsy, cooking a meal! Women were actually taught how to make an outfit on their own and get enjoyment out of using their own creativity. If they were good at it, they may even be able to sew for others becoming a seamstress and contributing to their family income with this work. Nowadays, home economics does not exist, replaced by computers. Instead of being proud of making their own clothes, women work gazillion hour work weeks to afford "designer" clothes. Hello!

Now don't get me wrong, I'm on a computer right now. My point is that we have eradicated many avenues for self esteem building then we wonder why so many young girls have low self esteem. We have effectively disempowered women by giving them the message that their feminine skills are somehow less desirable. Women who are mothers often refer to themselves as sheepishly as "domestic engineers" in an half-hearted attempt to make light of the situation and say, 'Hey what I'm doing is important too!'

What has happened here? When did this not so subtle change take place? When did it not become okay to just be who we are? Why do women have to sound apologetic for admitting they enjoy staying home with their young children and caring for them?

I just came from working in my garden. Because of my focus on pageant preparation, my front yard looks really unkempt. The flower bed and path were overgrown with weeds and everything needed care. I kept putting it off until after the pageant. Well the pageant is over and I can relax a bit. As I began to pull the weeds up, my whole body relaxed. It was like I took a gigantic sigh of relief. With the pull of each ugly weed, my thoughts became clearer. It was as if the weeds reflected my congested thoughts.

At the start of this year, one of my resolutions was simply, to create beauty. I had almost forgotten how important this is until I began to pull up those weeds. You see, gardening is like meditating. It is not only creating beauty but turning any negative energy into something positive.
As you pull up weeds of deep resentment and anger, you sow seeds of hope and dreams. The dreams happen as your flowers grow. Gardening is a metaphor for my life.

I am happy to be who I am. You won't find me in a boardroom,(unless I'm there giving a motivational speech). You won't find me doing neuro surgery or developing nuclear fusion theories.
You won't find me with my Blacktooth in one ear, a brief case in my hand a a cape flowing around my neck either. Where you will find me is at a CFA cat show sharing my love of Siamese cats with others. You will find me leading my Narcotics Anonymous group and leading women into recovery. You will find me at church on Sunday worshipping my Lord and saviour. You will find me at an internet marketing seminar learning ow to optimize web site placement so I can share my talents with others. And you will find me in my garden creating beauty in my neighborhood.

I am happy to be who I am, not Superwoman.

Comment by:Christallin @ 05/23/2008, 01:14:33 AM | Hi Christalin,
Seems like we are partly on similar planes. Last night I was finally weeding too.I came here after writing my last column. Maybe you'll get a laugh reading it.
However, I do think women need to create whatever life they choose. We need those rocket scientists etc. We need women who can forge to new horizons using their talents all of them. We also need ways to create inner integrity, and blaze paths that keep balance and health. Always time to pray. Yes keep your path.
PS if you like my posts cold you send a few over? Thanks. Mary (Keep writing!)
