Perspective is a Dose of Reality06/05/2008 03:21 PM | Thankful for what I've Got!
Perspective is a Dose of Reality
Got a big thump on the head from God yesterday afternoon. After returning home from what must have been my gazallioneth heavy workout. I picked up a Glamour magazine to read while relaxing at home. I've been on a diet plateau and doing a lot of commiserating about my weight loss strategies and my weight loss goal that continues to elude me. At 5'10" and 159 lbs. I'm not overweight by any stretch of the imagination. I wear size 9 and most people ask where I want to lose weight ? And that they wish they were my size. Ah but as a pageant queen, I expect myself to be perfect or near perfect. After all, I'm a professional beauty, right?

Wrong! I just got a big giant dose of reality that put my unrealistic quest for perfection in perspective. On page 23 of the July issue of Glamour, I read about the first ever "Miss Landmine" contest held this spring in war torn Angola. 18 women disfigured by landmines competed for the title. In a country whose 27 years of civil unrest have led to an estimated 80,000 people being maimed; these 18 women stood up and counted for something truly meaningful. They brought awareness of the damage these land mines inflict on their unintentional victims. In this pageant there were no losers. All the contestants received scholarships or money to start businesses and new lives.

What a difference it makes to live in the United States. We are able to take walking in a field for granted. We don't have to concern ourselves with a trivial thought like having a leg blown off while taking a stroll. When people talk about "starving yourself" here, they usually mean you ate way less that usual, not that you didn't eat at all for weeks. If you miss a meal here, invariably someone will ask why you are starving yourself. While I'm going on Master Cleanse to lose weight, people in other countries have no choice whether to eat or not eat. There is no food.

And so I appreciate what God is telling me about simply being thankful for what I have. Perfection is a laudable goal to strive for but it is unrealistic. We are beautiful because of who we are as people and how God is using us for His glory. Perfect figures, teeth, hair, and meanigful platforms all aside. It's who we are that is truly important. How I admire those 18 women and their courage to celebrate beauty in such a unique and important way. I pray that God will continue to talk to me the way He does and that I will listen.
