Technology all got started with the first communications revolution: the invention of phonetic writing circa 1000 B.C. Ever since, we as humans have been trying to evolve and better our ways of communicating and interacting with each other through technology. From the second communications revolution (the invention of movable type in 1455) to the third and most recent communications revolution (the invention of digital computers in 1951), technology has been evolving all to better human interaction. Before any of these revolutions occurred, there was only speaking and interacting through movement (which is perhaps why we still feel the need to speak while moving our hands), but now there are so many more options! Now we can write to each other, whether that be by email or the oh-so-outdated letter (Yes, with a stamp and envelope and everything!) or we can just call each other on the phone, even chat live on the Internet through instant messaging or webcams.
Technology isn’t just about progressing intellectually and increasing the comfort of certain tasks. It’s also about bettering our ways of communicating with each other. So what would I do without technology? Well, I’d find it pretty hard to communicate with other people. Sure, there’s always talking in person. But nowadays, it’s pretty hard to catch any of my friends or family in person without first having to call them or email them and set a time to meet up. Cell phones, computers, Internet, and all other possible forms of communication and mass communication are technologies that it would be pretty difficult to live without in this day and age.
Without technology, we would have no newspaper, no magazines, no television, no real link to the world outside that in which we live. And what a small circle to stay in for the rest of your life, to know no different! And what a frightening thought! Without these basic technologies, we’d be living in a world beyond the Dark Ages. There would have been no technology, no literary works, and no great inventions for us to forget about. We would just still be sitting around trying to figure out how to better live in caves. Okay, so that’s cliche, but it’s also the truth. From the age-old invention of the wheel all the way up to the world-changing invention of the Internet, technology has only bettered our lives and how we interact with other people. Indeed, what would we do without it?
