Gypset combines the words Gypsy and jet set together and defines the style of emerging group of artists, musicians, fashion designers, surfers, and bon vivants who lead semi-nomadic and uncoventional lives-- similar to boho chic, but has it's own definition.
On Monday, author Julia Chaplin arrived at the Cynthia Rowley store in Soho to celebrate her new book Gypset Style and what better place to stop by? The fashion designer is known for her love for adventure and the outdoors (she even has a vintage bicycle in her store).
The author and journalist wrote Gypset Style after traveling the world and meeting people who mix the high and low by combing a nomadic life of a Gypsy with the sophistication of a jet setter. The book compiles images of the Gypsetters she came across during her travels and explores the evolution of the Gypset-- from the British romantic poets, backpackers, to trust fund hippies.
Although creativity is more important than money to these "Gypsetters," I asked Julia what fashion designers depicted the Gypset style the most. The author mentioned Missoni, Alice Temperley, Emilio Pucci, Matthew Williamson and of course, Cynthia Rowley. To get the Gypset look, Julia suggested mixing new with vintage pieces (she wore a handmade necklace a friend bought from Turkey with a black dress). She also said this lifestyle-inspired trend is here to stay, especially in this economy.
Gypset Style is available online at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and in bookstores.
