William Tempest showed off his Spring/Summer 2010 collection at London Fashion Week this fall with standout pieces including a structured, peach-colored bodysuit, a form-fitting black and white printed dress, and a selection of daring minis.
Last week, I had a chance to meet William and preview his line along with eleven other Spring 2010 collections from the UK's best up and coming designers. The event, hosted by the Centre for Fashion Enterprise, gave us a taste of London fashion and allowed these designers an opportunity to showcase their talent in New York City.
Although he's only 23, William Tempest has already produced a very impressive portfolio. While studying at the London College of Fashion, he worked for Giles Deacon, collaborated with Diesel, and even designed pieces for Madonna. Soon after, he debuted his Fall 2008 collection and has since expanded his label while gaining fans such as Emma Watson and Victoria Beckham.
I asked him about his inspiration for the spring collection, his trip to New York City, and if he would consider designing a more accessible line in the future. Check out what he had to say.
Tell us a little bit about your inspiration from your Spring 2010 collection. My Spring 2010 collection ‘A View to a Kill’ celebrates all things seductive, powerful and provocative. 1940’s lingerie advertising, Le Crazy Horse de Paris, and tales of Ian Fleming’s secret agent James Bond come together to inspire an alluring, feminine collection of sculptural mini-dresses and eveningwear!
Your pieces feature a lot of cut-outs and provocative corset styles... how would you describe a woman who would wear your designs?
She is definitely very fun, confident and aware of her sexuality.
You've dressed quite a few big celebs like Emma Watson, Victoria Beckham, and Madonna. How did they discover your pieces?
Emma came to my first show in London and really wanted to wear one of the looks to her movie premier in LA, she looked stunning. Usually the celebrities I have dressed have read about me in the press or their stylist has seen my pieces and thinks they would like them.
What do you think is the biggest difference between the UK and US fashion markets?
I think that New York Fashion Week and ready-to-wear is definitely more commercial, whereas London Fashion Week is more creative and seems to be the place for young designers to be discovered.
The ‘high-street’ in the UK however is a really great place to shop and you can find some amazing pieces at low prices.
How was your visit to New York City? What was your favorite part of UK designer preview?
It has been fantastic being able to meet everyone over in New York in person and it is great to be able to put a face to a name!
Who are some of the designers working today that inspire you?
Alber Elbaz, Rouland Mouret
What would you say is your philosophy on fashion and what motivates you to create new collection every season?
Fashion is all about moving forwards. I am always really motivated to move onto the next collection because I always have something new I want to experiment with. I cut the majority of my patterns myself, which is something I love doing and allows me to push and challenge myself.
High-low collaborations seem to be the biggest trend these days. Do you see yourself exploring this direction in the future?
I would definitely be interested in collaborating with another label. Fashion is for everyone and at the end of the day what I love most is seeing my designs worn and being appreciated.
Do you have a brand in mind you would love to collaborate with?
Speedo because I like swimming and I’d really love to do swimwear.
Have you started working on your Fall 2010 collection? If so, can you tell us what can we expect?
I don’t want to give too much away but for Fall 2010 I am being inspired by a recent visit to Dubai, and I am really excited about the collection!
