Indiana Jones and the Kingdom ...
I am a total sucker for Indiana Jones, and although reviews have been mixed, I truthfully loved every second of the latest installment. Set in 1957 at the height of the Red Scare, it deals wittily with the rise of both nuclear weapons and the nuclear family.
This picture sends Indy to South America in search of his old colleague "Ox" who has been captured by the Soviets, in the hopes that he will lead them to the crystal skull which will...well, I wasn't entirely clear on exactly what it does, but the end result would be Cate Blanchett (with a delightfully campy Russian accent, some killer boots and a sword) gaining mind control over the whole world. (I didn't say this was Citizen Kane, OK?) Karen Allen returns, satisfyingly, as Indy's true love Marion Ravenwood, and Shia LaBeouf sets up for a rumored spin off as Mutt Williams, the motorcycle riding greaser/James Dean clone who arrives early on in a truly classic chase scene. All in all, a true summer movie, and one that would be enjoyed by anyone who doesn't mind a healthy serving of cheese with their popcorn.
