The Car Company That Will Save The Planet
The Car Company That Will Save...
Surely, everyone has noticed the rise in fuel prices.  It's something that is always buzz worthy.  Duly noted, are the changes to the automotive industry and the current battle of, who can beat who in the realm of fuel economy.  The  award for this goes to a small manufacture out of California called Aptera.  The company was the brainchild of Steve Fambro who started the company 5 years ago.  The Apetera gets 300 Miles per gallon, seats 2 occupants comfortably, and has a top speed of 90 miles per hour.  There is a fully electric model that gets a cruising range of 120 miles, and there is the plug-in hybrid that gets 300 miles per gallon for the first 100 miles or so, and after that it drops to 120 miles per gallon.  The technology that has gone into this is brain draining, the roof panel is made of solar cells that propel excess heat out of the cabin through a pipe in back to reduce drag, it meets safety standards for a car but is only classified as a motorcycle by the highway institute for safety, and it has a drive train that is light enough to hold in your hands.  You might expect something like this to cost you an arm, a leg, and maybe your next born child, but it doesn't.  Prices are starting at around 30k for the hybrid that you can drive extended distances without having to recharge it, and about 28k for the purely electric one.  These figures are not set in stone but it is what the developers were going for.  The car does only sit two so, will it be the next Ford Mustang in terms of sales?? No...but it will change the way we look at the automotive industry.  Maybe some of the brilliant tech heavy stuff will even make it into cars of the future allowing us to drive till our eyeballs pop out while still keeping the earth happy, and not depleting the resources the long gone fossilized dinosaurs have given us.

That's pretty amazing. My question is: when are they going to make a version that is still somewhat practical? A two-seater really doesn't work for me or most people I know :(

The production of this car is a display of what technologies are available right now. I would expect other car companies will be implementing some of these technologies into their cars very soon as the 35mpg standard is creeping up as of 2012.
