Circa 1970—original Bill Blass designs were resurrected, in all its glory, as Peter Som recreated the American design house. The debut of Bill Blass, under the new direction of Peter Som, was a highly anticipated show for Fall/Winter 08'. Rightly so, the likes of Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley eagerly awaited (front row of course) for what was clearly one of the best collections shown in the Tents thus far.
Ultimate luxury, redefined classics, and impeccable tailoring were the foundations of this incredible collection. Som paid homage to the 70’s with a modern twist, introducing fitted pant-suits, high-neck tie shirts, jeweled colored furs and rich combinations of textured fabrics—American women’s wear at its best. Even the simple details, like adding a casual boat neck and side pockets to a highly opulent bell-shaped dress, proved Som's shear genius. Few designers can find that happy medium, in imparting stately grandeur, yet modernly wearable clothes, Peter Som did.
Interesting color play also kept the collection fresh. The use of emerald and topaz blue were among my favorite combinations. Though, the rich blue and brown floral confetti-sequins dress worn by Jessica Stam (model of the moment) played a close second. Accents of antique amethyst, olive, and black cherry were the perfect touch of elegance, contrasted against heather gray, pearl, black and white.
This woman loves to play dress up. She is confident, well-traveled, and independent. Her strong sense of herself allows her to experiment with textures, shapes and color to create her unique sense of style. Bill Blass designed by Peter Som, has redefined the modern day well-dressed woman.
