Project Runway Season 5, Episode 5
Project Runway Season 5, Episo...

We are down to TWELVE designers and things are starting to get interesting.  More personality conflicts, more difficult challenges, more meltdowns!

We begin with a review of last weeks' successes, failures, and one-liners.  Korto won the Olympic challenge with her boring pantsuit.  Jennifer lost with her tea party outfit.

Korto begins by reminding us she has immunity and says she can relax and leave the drama to everyone else.  (Oh, foolish Korto.)  Daniel and Keith are shown lifting weights because this is Bravo and there's always a need for gratuitous shots of boy bod. Blayne heads out of the apartment and then runs back to close the door which he forgot to shut after himself.  He's so charmingly scatterbrained, isn't he?

Heidi appears before them wearing another variation of the short, tight, sparkly black dress that she seems to be in love with this season.  Korto decides to keep her model, Katarina.  Then Heidi tells the contestants that their challenge this week is to design something for a high powered and glamorous professional woman who will be introduced to them by Tim back at the workroom.  Blayne says,  "I just really don't want it to be Hillary Clinton because I would never win if I made a neon pantsuit." I like him better and better every episode.

Blayne is in luck, however, because it turns out the high powered, glamorous professional woman is none other than...BROOKE SHIELDS!  OMG!  Brooke, looking fabulous as always, tells the designers they will be creating something for her character on the show Lipstick Jungle.  It must be a day-to-night look that reflects the character's bohemian-to-professional evolution, and love of hyphens.

The twist this week is that the designers are going to work as...TEAMS!  YES!  I love team episodes.  So much more opportunity for ego clashing and finger pointing!  So basically, all twelve of them will have to come up with a sketch, pitch it to Brooke, and she'll pick her six favorites.  The designers who successfully woo Ms. Shields will choose their teammate out of the non-chosen pool.  NOW SKETCH MOTHERFUCKERS!  SKETCH LIKE THE WIND!

Suede is the first person to pitch his design to Brooke, and he assures her that despite the puffy sleeves in his drawing he won't make her look "1800's".  Kelli shows Brooke a sketch of a leopard print dress that looks like it belongs on a streetwalker.  She says, "I love leopard print" and I snort because she's wearing it herself, making her seem completely one-dimensional.  Blayne is pitching Bermuda shorts, for cryin' out loud.  (At least they aren't neon).  Keith schmoozes Brooke and tells her how tall and sexy she is, and she giggles, "Flattery will get you everywhere!"  I don't think Keith as gay as he thinks he is.   Stella pitches a dress with a leather corset over it, and Brooke says, "Well, she still has to go to work in this..." causing Stella to look at her as if she is speaking in Cantonese.  Joe has a tuxedo shirt.  Leanne has a beautiful design that inspires Brooke to say "I want this for my real life!"

Brooke now announces that the winning design will get to be featured on the show!  The designers all go ga-ga.  She picks the six designers with her favorite sketches:  Keith, Karto, Jerell, Kelli, Terri, and Blayne.  I'm not exactly sure what the logic behind her choices was, because Leanne, Suede and Daniel all had far superior design ideas to Kelli and Blayne.  But whatever.  It's Brooke's party.

Blayne chooses Leanne as his partner.  She is worried since their design styles are so different, and I don't blame her one bit.  Keith chooses Kenley, but interviews immediately afterward, "As long as I can get her to shut her mouth a little bit and stick to sewing, we'll be good."  Karto chooses Joe.  Kelli chooses Daniel.  And that leaves Stella with Jerell, who was delightfully sweet, telling her they were going to 'tear it up' and use her skill set.

Shopping at Mood: we see Keith and Kenley arguing about fabric.  Kenley is insisting that they buy this horrible flower-printed crap.  She seems on the verge of a tantrum.  Tim intervenes and tells them to look around.  Daniel and Kelli are also arguing because he is not happy with Kelli's fabric choices. He prefers 'high end' fabrics, and doesn't care for black lace and leopard print.  Hmm.  I see his point.

Kenley and Daniel sit together at the sewing machines and bitch about the projects they are working on. Suede is looking highly concerned and Terri asks him what is going on.  He says he's nervous about cutting the fabric, and well, everything else.  Terri is standing over him like a sweat shop manager, while he is hunched over his sewing machine looking like a whipped puppy.  Then, Terri (in interview) unleashes a quote of epic proportions:

"I dunno what he's packing, balls or vajayjay, but he needs to work that out, cause I ain't got no babies, ain't nobody sucking on my titties, so please, man up!".  I really don't even know what to say to that.  Except, "BWAH!"

Blayne reveals that he grew up in Yakima, Washington which also happens to be the birthplace of yours truly. Therefore, I feel the need to root for Blayne even if he is sort of a twit.

Tim arrives and tells everyone he's sending in their models early for fittings.  Daniel's skirt is a total mess, and I think he has some kind of sewing disability.  I mean, the skirt he made is a straight, black skirt--and he has to redo the entire thing.  Terri is shown giving some very un-constructive criticism to Suede with regard to the blouse he made.  He interviews screaming and tugging at his Mohawk.  Terri is being completely assy about this.  I mean, her outfit is made of two pieces--a pair of plain black pants, and this wild, ruffly, flowery blouse that looks enormously complicated.  She delegated the shirt to Suede, then acted pissy the entire time because he wasn't doing it exactly the way she wanted.  RUDENESS.

I love David Beckham.  I love Sharpies.  Therefore, I love this commercial.

Tim returns to offer his guidance.  Blayne and Leanne show their outfit to Tim who tells them it looks a little too sporty/casual to be considered evening wear. Jerell and Stella earn praises for their 'true collaboration.'  Tim looks and Daniel and Kelli's outfit and says, "I'm dubious."  Oh, Tim.  You should be a fucking diplomat.  Suede and Terri get encouragement and seem genuinely relieved when Tim tells them their outfit looks great.  He is also very happy with Keith and Kenley's design.  Joe and Karto show their sheath dress which is covered with a large orange jacket.  Tim describes it as a "big sweet potato."  Karto immediately gets defensive when Joe agrees with Tim about the poofiness of the jacket.  Joe looks a little like a deer in headlights.

Day of the Runway and Blayne is eating cereal in the kitchen, talking smack about how great it will be to see his design on the Brooke's show.  Everyone is ignoring him.  At Parson's it's crunch time and no one looks like they are in a good mood.  Kenley interviews that Daniel 'cracks her up' because he's always talking about how great his elegant, sophisticated taste is--but she says she hasn't really seen it. Nice, huh? Tim shows back up in his pinstripe suit and bubblegum pink tie.  He tells them it's hair, makeup and BlueFly.com Accessory Wall time.  And then...It's off to the Runway!

Korto and Joe's outfit is first.  It's a tan colored strapless sheath with a bit of satin around the top.  The 'sweet potato' jacket has been tailored to look more form fitting and it is actually very nice.  Maybe a little too funky for Brooke Shields, but I'd wear it.  Kelli and Daniel's outfit looks so bad, I seriously cannot believe this outfit is even ON Project Runway.  It looks like it was bought in 1989 in a mall store. The bottom is black knee-length skirt and the top is this midriff-baring half shirt with a bustier made out of teal satin, black lace, and leopard print fabric.  It also has a cheesy little jacket with a ruffle around the bottom.  (MY EYES!)

Jerell and Steall's outfit is..well..amazing.  Jerell is quickly becoming my favorite designer.  It is a rich and luscious combination of colors and textures inspired by bohemian style, but with the lines of haute couture.  Stella had created a large mustard leather belt that made the whole thing look hip rather than 'hippie'.  It is  absolutely gorgeous and looks like a miliion bucks.  Or at least $4,500.

Keith and Kenley have designed a skirt and blouse.  The skirt his long  and brown with layers of scalloped fringe.  The top is a tasteful floral pattern (not Kenley's original choice) with bohemian-style handkerchief sleeves that can be tied up or let down for variations on the look.  Terri and Suede's outfit is nice, but it doesn't really look like business wear.  It seems far too casual for a high profile business woman to wear to the office, although she could definitely wear it out later that night.  However, if that outfit was too laid back then Blayne and Leanne's was pretty much sportswear.  The design and execution was excellent, but I don't think it would be wearable for the office, even on casual Friday.

The judges speak first with Jerell and Stella.  They loved everything about it, with the one exception of Brooke Shields who didn't like the big mustard leather belt.  What a party pooper.  Kelli and Daniel weakly tried to explain their monstrosity and Brooke said, "It just looks so much cheaper than I thought it could look."  OUCH.  Then, Michael Kors asks if he can see the model without the jacket.  He says, "HELLO?!  Slutty, slutty, slutty!"  Oh man.  If I ever meet Michael Kors I'm going to buy him a drink just for that comment.  And Nina chimes in, "I am concerned with the question of taste."  No mercy.  Kelli says if one of them should go home it should be Daniel.  Daniel says he has high end, impeccable taste which causes Kenley to go into a fit of passive aggressive giggles.  She's kind of a bitch.

Keith and Kenley get a lot of praise from the judges, and Brooke says it looks like something her character would wear. Leanne and Blayne are told that their design is too casual, which is true; but it looks very much like Blayne's original sketch which begs me to question why it was even chosen in the first place.

Winner:  Keith for his brown fringe skirt and floral top that managed to look great even despite Kenley's help.

Loser:  Kelli for using teal, leopard print and a bustier all in the same outfit, all after 1993.
