Fashion is a subtle reflection of the culture that surrounds us at any given time. This season’s innovative new styles show us that the strength of a woman, and her individual confidence to express herself through her wardrobe, have taken great strides in recent years. The Spring/Summer collections of 2008 express the designers’ feelings of freedom; that we have finally reached a time when there is no one particular trend to follow, but rather many to play with at our own will.
Floral patterns are making a fast comeback this season, as seen in Nicolas Ghesquiere’s contributions for the Balenciaga Spring shows. His unique balance of bold floral patterns and strong, curve altering silhouettes create a flattering and very feminine look on the runways. Though Balenciaga’s designs may be slightly impractical for day-to-day life, dresses by Dries Van Noten and Anna Sui allow you to wear this bold new trend out on the streets. If you are not feeling daring enough to cover yourself in foliage just yet, florals are also very prominent in accessory lines for Spring/Summer 08. Dolce and Gabbana, as well as Prada, both featured floral bags in their latest collections.
Everybody’s favorite “it-girl”, model Agyness Deyn, has been seen out and about in long, flowing dresses. This is a dramatic change from the typical theory that tall woman could only be sexy by showing off their miles of legs. Since her first sightings in these dresses there has been a progressing trend as woman realize that a form fitting dress with some extra length can make them feel extremely sexy, and comfortable, as their natural silhouettes are being shown off. If you are not comfortable with your curves on display for all to see, a simple black dress will have the same effect and leaves you with the fun task of color blocking to liven up the look. A bright baret or eye-catching jewelry would make excellent diversions from any of your insecurities.
This season’s accessories are all about having fun with your look. Wooden heels are being seen everywhere in generally neutral colors. Also big in shoes-of the-moment are mini wedges, the lighter and less dramatic version of the classic wedge. These flirty shoes are perfect for day wear when paired with skinnies, skirts, or short dresses such as the extremely adorable “painted” dresses from Dolce and Gabbana’s recent line. Last spring’s Gladiator sandal is back and ready to be taken to new levels. Designers have become more daring than the original idea and created higher strapped shoes that allow you to make a dramatic statement when paired with otherwise understated wardrobe pieces. As for bags, it is time to say goodbye to your massive, floppy purses, which managed to contain your entire life. Messenger and bucket bags are being seen everywhere. These petite bags are slightly bigger than your average clutch and hang on long, thin straps. They add to your look without taking over and allow you to start packing only the essentials.
There was a day when grandma’s big, gaudy rings were seen as outdated, but that day has passed as many designers are coming out with their versions of the perfect cocktail rings. Right now it is all about the bigger, the better. They are fun to play with as you add them into your club wear as the new dramatic piece that finishes you outfit, especially as chunky gold chains are on their way out the door.
We are living in a time of expression and playfulness. Women are finally feeling strong enough to start taking chances in their wardrobes and go to new lengths to feel good in their own skin. There is no longer a status quo of what is sexy, what is classy, what is acceptable. Have fun this season. Designers have given you the pieces to do so and you will enjoy yourself as you discover your new and ever evolving fashion identity.
