The spring '08 Betsey Johnson fashion show was, as usual, a flirtatious, eclectic mix of classic pin-up appeal mixed with funky colors like shocking pink and canary yellow. It was also marked by a distinctive 1950's prom theme, right down to the tuxedo-d dates accompanying select models down the runway and Johnson's "Prom Queen" t-shirt she wore at the end. We chose two looks -- one specific, and one more general -- to recreate in your own life. We love the playfulness of this look, which featured a striking polka-dot babydoll dress. This Polka Dot Halter Mini Dress ($22.80, Forever 21) is a fantastic substitution because it has the same fullness as the original, though it's a tad tamer for the average gal. Pair the dress with some Lolita-esque Sweet Heart Sunglasses ($16, Urban Outfitters) and lace tights. We found the exact same pair used in this look, for an unbelievable price! The Betsey Johnson Victoriana Tights are just $17.99 at Urban Outfitters! Get them in cream to really replicate the look, or try one of the other fun colors. Finally, we love the mini black hat that is cocked slightly askew on the model's head, but since we're slightly less eccentric, we'll mimic just the bow affixed to its brim. Snap one of the clips from this Barrette Bow Set ($5, Claire's) into your hair and you'll be set.
More so than any other designer, Betsey Johnson sends a plethora of fun, flirty dresses down the runway. The silhouettes are classic with a natural waistline and she frequently employs girlish details like bustier tops, sweetheart necklines, and accessories galore. Forever 21 has many party dresses that fit the "full on the bottom" mold that Betsey established, but in particular we love the Eyelet Sweetheart Dress ($27.80) and the Satin Cocktail Dress ($22.80). Try giving the dresses added visual interest with brightly-colored, skinny belts -- and don't be afraid to cinch above the dress's waist. This Xhilaration Skinny Patent Belt ($9.99, Target) is perfectly punchy.
For either of these looks, be sure to slip into strappy sandals, like the Mossimo Hailey Knotted Strap Heels ($19.99, Target) or the Chinese Laundry Willy Heels ($55.99, Heels.com). Of course, you could always sport you favorite black pumps and wear these Betsey Johnson Ballet Lace Up Socks ($12, Urban Outfitters); they definitely jive with the '50s aesthetic. But if only authentic Betsey will do, we found an original piece for less than her typical label price. This Mon Cheri Bow Dress ($213, eDressMe.com) – with its bright color, huge bow, and carefree party dress aesthetic -- hits all the right marks.
Betsey Johnson taps into the playful spirit of a fashionable girly girl, which is fun to indulge in every once in a while. Let loose and add some Betsey to your life with our selections.
