Prom: your night to be DIFFERENT

My Prom Dress
My Prom Dress

As a senior in high school, the 'it thing' right now is prom.  People are frantic over who they are going to prom with, what they are going to wear, which group they are going to be with, and many more stressful factors that completely control a girls life.

Every day I am faced with these topics, not only because I am one of them, but because  I work at a dress store, that is the haven for teenage girls.  The thing though, that baffles me is how much girls care about what other girls think.

For instance, I found the perfect dress for myself about several months ago, and instead of getting it then like my guts told me, I decided to show my "friend" to see what she thought.  My friend, more like an associate, told me she didnt like it.  And so, I didnt get the dress then.  It is now that I realize that my friend doesnt know shit about fashion.  I have also realized at my work that most of these girls "friends" will convince them not to get something, and at looking at what they say, they also have no fashion sense.  But I digress.

The big thing that really annoys me is that because girls care so much about what other people think, most of them would never wear a dress that actually made a statement.  They dont want to be different.  They just want to wear the same run of the mill dress, and fit in with the crowd.  Argh...I wish girls could just take risks and wear things that can actually stand out.  I cant stand the girls that just want to look like everyone else.

My prom advice for any girl would be to wear something that is not only representative of your personality, but wear somthing that can be remembered.  Prom is the night to wear whatever the hell you want, whether it be hoochy or even gauty.  Just have fun...and dont give a damn what others think.

BTW- I totally got that dress that this friend of mine didnt like.  To me its totally hot, i look great in it, and i love it. I do though, want to know what other people with actual taste think about this dress.  I dont have a picture of me in the dress, but i am going to do a twist on old hollywood, and wear pink gloves with a jeweled bracelet over it, classic hair do but still glamerous, and my date will wear all black, and a pink tie.

Great Article girl! I totally agree with you....people these days care way too much about what others think to the extent that that they ignore their own instinct and the voice in their head! I'd love to see a pic of your dress...post it if you can! Have FUN!

Yay for prom! I agree on how you should wear what you love no matter what other's think. Plus, it's boring to be like everyone else! Fashion is a form of self expression! That dress on your post is so cute! I love the pink bow around the waist and the polka dots! Have fun! :)

I know what you mean. Everyone at prom last year wore knee length or above dresses, normally black or other very usual colours. I opted for a floor length yellow dress that made me feel like a princess regardless of what anyone else thought. I hope you'll show us all your dress!

I am 29 and 11 years graduated. I just happened upon your blog without looking at the title and thought, "Wow! I love that dress! I'd so totally wear that!" Then I actually read the entire blog. I worked in a dress shop (formal/prom, bridal, tux, etc) and remember trying to help girls find "the perfect dress" and 9 times out of 10, they'd bring friends. It got annoying and I would usually pull the one looking for the dress aside and tell her, "No matter what anyone says, this is YOUR dress. You need to find the one that's right for YOU. Even if your friends don't like it, how does it make YOU feel? Remember that." And 9 times out of 10, they got the dress they wanted, and not the one their "friends" said to get. Good for you for finding what was best for YOU!
