All That Hair

All That Hair
All That Hair
Curly, wavy, thin, whatever I decide to call it, my hair is nothing near luscious. At least not with a little help. Twenty treacherous years of torture, blow-outs and crazy perms, and I finally l gave up and earned how to have some fun with sprays and curling irons to get any look I desire. And here’s my secret...SO CAN YOU!

It irks me a little to see people I know leave their potentially beautiful hair knotted into a ball at the top of their heads when with a little work they can go form shabby to chic.

First part to my hair therapy... Stop washing your hair. Yeah I said it! Shampooing your hair everyday is way too damaging and dries out the follicles, preventing it form using the natural oils your body produces to give it that healthy protection it needs. Instead of a nightly scalp scrub=scrub down, try doing it every other day instead.

Plus factor = Vacation from blow drying and cut bad hair days in half.
Next, invest in the best leave in conditioner EVER... Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioner. I like to call it magic in a bottle. One squirt of this puppy, just the size of a dime, add an even rub through, and your hair is already fighting those frizzy day blues and looking luscious and healthy. What more can a girl ask for?

How about a good styling?
Take it from someone who has dyed her hair in all shades of the rainbow, color is defiantly not a good way to go. But for those naturally born brunettes who look banging as a blonde, there’s a way to keep your locks form crisping off.

Before you decide to style your hair make sure its not soaking wet. If your hair forecast is predicting light showers when you’re ready to dry it, it’s definitely going to make your life harder to get that killer Jessica Alba look you want and end up with Shakira. Simply towel dry and comb out your locks and let it dry about 80% before you blast the blower. it keeps it damp enough to mold the way you want it, and dry to the point where it wont take 10 minutes just to dry your bangs. Before you start attacking your roots and brushing while you’re drying, make sure you separate your hair. I use a hair clip to hold a bundle at the top of my head while I work from the bottom up, and tie back what I already styled.

Fun tip: Remember that tiny spout that came with your blower that you consistently ignore and have thrown to the back of your bathroom cabinet? Well, you’re going to thank the all-mighty Revlon you kept that. For a sleek and shiny style, pop that sucker on and go at it pointing downwards. Doing this, your follicles are closing in the right directing making hair softer and sexy sleek.

P.S. Do bangs last to frame your face to perfection?
If you Iron your hair, here’s what you do. Don’t go all the way to the tip of your ends. This cost you way too many split ends and haircuts to get rid of them. And if you’re going for sultry wavy ends, it gives you that extra body you’re looking for while keeping fly-aways in place.

Personally, I have learned to take my entire top layer, as well as the bottom layer underneath it all, and iron those to perfection. The hair in-between is protected from the humidity and if they start to crinkle, no one will notice because it looks like a stroke of styling genius.

Let’s say your not best friends with your blow dryer and don’t own an iron, then curly is the look your best to work with. Being the owner of my own head full of mondo waves, some days I don’t feel like taming my tresses. This is where my love for ceramic curling irons blossomed. For years I used gel, mouse, and hairspray to get that frizz free wave look, and then I realized I resembled a wet cocker spaniel, and decided to go all natural with air dried locks. When that turned into a fro of a disaster, I discovered an amazing secret.

Wanting naturally looking, perfected curls, you know… like the chicks on the CW have, I would wake up in the morning, as natural as could be, and start up my iron. Some waves and curls survived the night, others turned into a blobbed mess, and those were the target to go over. I combed and curled each piece around the crown of my head, a few at the bottom and VOUALA!!! PERFECION MADE EASY!

Your Reward? Satisfaction when people ask if your hair naturally looks like that, and you tell them OF COURSE! Feels great to be hated at times like these.

So there goes our first lesson of hair therapy. Get out there and remember, never use the excuse of not knowing how to do your hair because you, of all people, know it the best. All you have to do is  have a little fun while doing it.
