The first show is Marcel Ostertag, a designer from Munich. Overall I was a bit nonplussed with his show. It felt too long and in need of editing and it was unclear as to his point of view or who he was designing for. There were oversized floral prints on silk that seemed targeted to a resort wear audience but would make a fashion victim out of anyone. And on the flip side there were edgier pieces in black that had more appeal but seemed like a completely different designer. I left feeling utterly confused.
After that I went to a few stores recommended to me. I particularly loved lil shop which is full of Comme des Garcons clothing –much of which was on sale but unfortunately with the exchange rate made it too expensive for me!
In the evening there was first a reception for a local label called Franzius at the boutique store Konk which only showcases local designers. The crowd was great and we met some musicians who came from Scotland, Japan, and Wales but now live in Berlin and work together here.
We ended up going to dinner with them and then on to what was the highlight of the day the WESC party. The party was held at a club called The Broken Hearts Club in the Friedrichshain district. It’s an open-air club on the river and had this horrendous décor that looked like it was trying for a Robinson Crusoe via Disneyland look. Nevertheless we had a great time –I’m finding the people very open and friendly and so international... I’ve been told that Berlin is the City of Slackers and the place where people come who don’t want to grow up. Which, if true, at least makes for great parties. The sun was coming up when we made it back to our apartment to get ready for the next day.
