The National Arbor Foundation gives away 10 free trees with membership. Membership is only 15 dollars yearly. You can donate your free trees to anyone you wish so it might be helpful to donate to a Trees For the Future organization.

The trees come bare root and are usually small. I plant mine in a group by my pond in an area where they are less likely to be trampled by big gangling household pets (one in particular - my bloodhound Annie). Then when they are strong enough, I can move them to a place where they can stand independent.
