Review-
Artsit- Britney Spears
Album- Blackout
Release Date- 10/30/2007
Rating- 8/10
Her life has undoubtedly been one of the most entertaining train wrecks to ever grace the rails of Hollywood, however the singer’s fifth studio album has her fans wanting more and critics pleasantly surprised. This writer has never been a Britney fan, but cannot deny the beautifully produced music that fills “Blackout.” I will admit, I wasn’t expecting much when I heard that Britney was releasing a new album. I was sure that this new endeavor would join the pile of garbage that Britney’s life seems to be producing lately, but quickly changed my mind after previewing the twelve tracks.
Britney wants to dance, and she makes it pretty clear with this release. All twelve tracks are danceable club hits with hypnotic melodies and lyrics. This writer tried very hard to find a “bad” track amongst the group but failed. Britney opens the album with “Gimme More,” in which she welcomes herself back by cooing “Its Britney Bitch!” The tone set pretty much stays constant throughout. One cannot help but bounce to the mesmerizing beats delivered on the track. The vocals and lyrics are very mediocre, but undeniably catchy. We have to credit one of the tracks contributing writers Keri Hilson (The Way I Are w/ Timbaland) for that! “Piece of Me” is my personal favorite because it contains all of the elements of a perfect single, such as; a catchy Melody, spellbinding rhythm, relevant lyrics, and ultimately great production. This is a new sound for Britney and escapes the repetitiveness that stigmatizes this album. She also suprises us with some self awarness. I’m Miss American Dream since I was 17, I’m Mrs. Lifestyles of the rich and famous, I’m Mrs. Oh my God that Britney’s Shameless, I’m Mrs. Extra! Extra! This just in, I’m Mrs. She’s too big now she’s too thin.
The last track takes a quick break from the fast pace of the album to say F you to K-fed for tentatively ruining her career. These lyrics are undoubtedly relevant and force us to relate.
“My friends said you would play me, But I just said they're crazy
While I was crying, praying, Was it true?” “Goodbye, it’s time for me to move along. Goodbye, it’s time for me to get it on. Okay, I'm tired of singing sad songs. All right, it’s time for me. Britney lets go!
All tracks share the same bouncy feel that we all have grown to love Britney for. I am personally happy for Britney and her success with this album. Now if only she could put as much perfection into her personal life, then I can finally watch E! News again!
