Harry Potter: A Tale With a Twist09/18/2007 01:35 PM | Phoenix Song Fan Fiction
Imagine if the reason Petunia Dursley took little Harry Potter into her home was that her own precious son had an innate unnaturalness of his own. Imagine if Dumbledore had promised to hide this apparent defect in exchange for her hospitality. The death of Dumbledore would have brought an abrupt halt to this protection, leaving Dudley untrained and performing accidental magic.
Intriguing isn’t it? If you want more of this story, there’s only once place to find it. http://www.phoenixsong.net/fanfiction/story/3517/. It’s a work of fan fiction entitled ‘The Seventh Horcrux’ and written by Melindaleo.
Melindaleo has re-written Rowling’s seventh Harry Potter novel from beginning to end to tell the story he though readers really wanted to hear. If Rowling left you wanting more, or wanting things to go differently, I think Melindaleo’s tale just might be potion for you. His work is a masterpiece of literary genius. He did leave me pondering something though…
What makes a book a book? Is it that tangible object you display on your shelf? A collection of works divided into chapters and stamped with the seal of approval from a publisher? Are e-books only books because they were published on paper first?
The definition of a book is of interest to me now that I have discovered a new genre: Fan Fiction. While I was completely enthralled by the fan fiction piece that I just read, I had this strange feeling that I wasn’t really reading a book. Somehow fan fiction fails to provide that sense of personal accomplishment derived from the knowledge that I’ve added another book to my mental library.
While reading fan fiction may not incite the same sense that I’m getting closer to having conquering the shelves at my local book store, good fan fiction does do something interesting. It takes the work of an author and recreates it into the veins and venues that provide readers with a sense of heightened satisfaction and continues the magic of the tale.
I don’t want to ruin the book, if you chose to call it such, but I’ll let you know that instead of letting the characters spend so much time lying low and confused in the woods, Melindaleo’s characters take on a whole new series of adventures with proactive attitudes. The story starts with a little twist and finishes with a bang.
