An Overview

Green Cleaning is a healthy process you can apply to clean your home without effecting the environment in any adverse way. This type of cleaning is a major shift from conventional cleaning methods. In conventional cleaning, the agents we use are in most cases, chemically reactive and toxic. Almost all of these products exude Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), which are fairly damaging for your lungs and skin, besides other having undesirable effects.

The phrase "green friendly" can be applied to a household or industrial cleaning product subject to its compliance to certain stipulations related to its manufacturing, packaging and distribution. When the term "green" is applied to a cleaning product, it indicates that the product is organically degradable. It also suggests that the applied manufacturing process is eco-friendly.

Do you know that the level of pollutants of your indoor air can be even 100 times more than your outdoors? Yes, this is what a report of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says. The main reason being, the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that your traditional cleaning products breath out.

There are plenty of green cleaning programs available for you that signify clean indoor air, dumping and recycling of toxic products.

Now, let's take a close look at the major paybacks of using green friendly cleaning products.

The help it does to your home and environment:

Protects from diseases Unlike green friendly cleaning products, traditional cleaning supplies are filled with allergens, chemical sensitivities and harmful bacteria. So, usages of green friendly items assure complete health safety.

Keeps the air clean According to reports published by the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), one of the most crucial environmental health problems is your indoor air pollution. In another sensational revelation, the agency informs that the traditional household cleaners are 3 times more accountable in causing cancer compared to air pollution. You can experience the strong toxic odors of the synthetic cleaning agents even when they are in a tightly sealed package. Remember, these vapors remain in your well sealed home. Through another survey done through a span of 15 years the EPA found that the death rate from cancer was 54% higher for women who stayed at home. The reason was the regular exposure those women had to the toxic chemicals found in conventional household cleaning products. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has linked 150 chemicals that are usually found in homes with ailments like allergies, birth defects, breast cancer, prostate cancer, declining sperm counts, and psychological abnormalities.

Thus, if you really intend to breathe safe and breathe clean, you need to shift to green cleaning.

Takes care of children In US, more than 5 million people become victims of household poisoning every year. Many of these incidents turn out to be fatal. You will be more shocked to know that the majority of victims of household poisoning are children who, by mistake take in the poisonous items contained in all traditional cleaning supplies. Further, due to regular inhaling of the poison that floats in the air, they succumb to serious health hazards like brain damage, blinding, skin burns etc.

Guards the eco-system Everyday we drain down 32 million pounds through the conventional cleaning supplies. The sewage plants are not equipped enough to process or discard these toxic chemicals. Thus, these poisonous items contaminate the eco-system which results into a number of environmental hazards like blooming of algae and amassing of contaminants in fish and wildlife. Moreover, these household wastes seep through the ground and infect lakes and streams.

Looks after your pets Keep in mind that, your pets, whom you love so much are quite vulnerable to the toxic effluents of your traditional cleaning supplies. The reason is, your pets remain indoors in most part of the day and this enhances the probability of intoxication. Your cats stand in with the maximum risk as they have a system which is not very competent in metabolizing of foreign elements.

The bottom line is that green cleaning is good for the health of your home and helps protect your environment.

This is a very informative article. Though some of the ills of traditional cleaners are sensationalized in the media, it certainly can't hurt to switch to green ones that clean just as well without any of the side effects (and they smell better too!)

Wow, thanks for this great article. That statistic about women who stayed home is shocking. And I love my dog so much, I feel terrible for ever having used the wrong stuff in the house! I generally use Seventh Generation products, and I'm challenging myself to go entirely green w/products.

Thanks for the great article. More people need to be educated about using green products in the home. I've read many of the EPA reports and switched to using safer products almost 5 years ago!
