“Honey, can you pass the bunny?”
Okay. So that’s probably not the exact phrase one would like to hear around the Easter dinner table. However, believe it or not, a group of Christians are doing just that.
Yep. I’m not kidding. They’re eating bunny.
You know, a rabbit, a hare, Bugs… THUMBER. Think of what Bambi would think.
Ten years ago, students at the University of Illinois decided to do something about the overdone, drawn out, bunny masquerade for Easter. It started out small- a few friends thinking it would be funny to eat rabbit for Easter dinner. However, a lot has changed since 1998. Now 30 to 35 people have joined in on the fun. They roast bunnies together on Easter, which has become an annual tradition.
Who are the culprits? Some are non-Christian but most come from the Intervarsity Fellowship church on the Illinois campus. In any case, they claim their goal is to rid the world of the cute fuzzy bunny connection with the holy day of the resurrection of Christ
While I give them points for determination and creativity…why the bunny? I don’t think it did any physical harm. In fact, it probably didn’t even know that it was the symbol of Easter.
In any case, I think we need to start rethinking our priorities before Santa and the Reindeer are next on the barbecue list. After all, they're conflicting with Christmas.
