The other day I was sitting around, lazy, eating cheese puffs from the jumbo bag (bad girl, I know) and what would pop on my television screen but Ten Years Younger (confession: I love TLC). Now I'm not a huge fan of TYY, but I do like the clothing segment of the show and that's what they were on so I figured I'd watch for five minutes or so before switching to something more entertaining. And there they started talking about myshape.com- I was hooked.
The idea of myshape.com is, essentially, they do all the shopping for you. No finding out such and such a shirt isn't going to work after you've fallen in love with it, no searching through racks of clothes that you can already tell will look horrible on you. No, because at myshape.com you enter your measurements (with step-by-step instructions) and they pick out the clothes that are most suited to your body type and preferences. Intriguing.
I admit I was skeptical about how well this would work, so I decided to try it out for myself. Below, my review. I'd love to hear if anyone else has used this site before, and what their experience was.
Signing up: In order to get your "personal store" you have to register, which was super simple since you just put in your email and password.
Preferences and Measurements: This is probably the longest part of the entire process. There are at least 25 measurements you have to go through, everything from bra size to height to waist circumfrence, and countless others. Some of them were tricky to obtain alone so enlisting the service of a friend might be useful. The site will assign you one of their seven body types using your measurements, I was Type A (bigger hips than shoulders and bust). No surprise there.
I was impressed by all the "preferences" you could choose for your clothes. They asked about your style (romantic, classic, etc) and you could actually choose more than one unlike on some websites. You could also choose how you wanted your clothes to fit (snug/loose) at different body areas (hips, shoulders, waist, etc). There was a section for preferred fabrics that you can fill out if you're opposed to certain types (like, uh, polyester *shudder*). They also asked about age, occupation, how much you spent on an average outfit, and a ton of other things that are all relevant to finding you the perfect clothes.
Shopping!: Finally done with the preferences and measurements and it was on to the shopping! This was the part I was most curious about, because I wanted to see if there really was a good selection of clothes. I was most skeptical about whether the clothes would be fashionable, affordable, and actually appropriate to my body type. For the most part, I wasn't disappointed. They had a great selection of cute clothes, with lots of colorful tops and a decent selection of dark denim. To be honest though, I wasn't blown away. The clothes were cute, but I think they're aimed at a slightly older demographic from what I could see, more Mom than Student. Although I did fall in love with a few things, I could have gone for a few more edgy, fashionable pieces.
My other problem was the price: not horrible, but nothing was really in my immediate price range (which is admittedly very low unless I win the lottery). Most of the jeans were $100+ and the tops were mostly $50+ in my body type except a few assorted tanks. Still, not horrible and I bet you could find some deals if you dug deeper than I did. Also, everything there that I could see actually was appropriate to my body type so I think they did a great job paying attention to that.
Overall: Too pricey for a college student and the selection didn't blow me away. Still, extremely convenient and there are a ton of cute clothes, so if you're time pressed then this is definitely something to check out. Also, if you're clueless about your body type and what looks good one it, this is a good place to start. Personally, I like shopping and the thrill of the search, so I felt a little limited with this site because it sets everything up for me. I probably won't be using myshape.com very often but I would reccomend it to other women who want cute clothes but not the search for it.
One Last Drawback: Nothing for men. I did a little snooping and it looks like they're trying to create a site for men though, so check back often if you're a guy and this is something you're interested in.
One Last Benefit: If you're struggling with your size, check out the option where you can order clothes and myshape.com will send you the recommended size without telling you what it is. They use your measurements, you always get the right size, and you don't have to grapple with the old "Am I really a 14? Maybe I'm a 12..." argument ever again. Probably the best idea on the entire site.
