“A girl should be two things – classy and fabulous.” – Coco Chanel
It is a beautiful and rare gift to design clothes that walk the line of ladylike without stumbling into “stuffy” territory – classy and fabulous, but certainly not pretentious. Designer Tori Nichel possesses this special skill, bearing a natural fashion savvy that could rival the Chanels and von Furstenbergs of our generation.
Ms. Nichel’s eponymous line came onto the scene in 2006 but this lady is no stranger to the fashion industry, having worked first for Dana Bachman, then lending her talent to the team at Kenneth Cole. Her Spring ’07 collection, titled “Frida: A Love Story,” pays homage to Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo and the romantic and tragic life she lived. The pieces embody the ladylike glamour of the 1940s, with touches of delicate lace, seductively plunging necklines, and softly fluttering sleeves, while maintaining the tailored structure and intricate detailing that have become the designer’s signature.
The entire collection is absolutely glorious - I am loving the white pant suit with cropped, collarless blazer, and the flirty babydoll frock with huge blue and white paisleys is positively adorable! But the standout piece of the collection is definitely the ultra-glamorous, red, down-to-there evening gown with sweet ruffle details.
