The special July issue of Italian Vogue featuring 100-plus pages of images of black women, has got readers asking for more.
The issue released recently in the US sold out within hours, prompting Conde Nast to reprint the issue. Noami Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Liya Kebede, Sessilee Lopez, Tyra Banks, Iman and Alek Wek, are just a few of the models featured in the issue aimed at challenging the racial makeup of the fashion industry and its European-centered conceptions of beauty.
Italian Vogue editor Franca Sozzani said that another source of inspiration for the July issue came from watching Barack Obama during the presidential race. "If America is ready for Obama, why won't they be ready for black models," Sozzani says.
The buzz surrounding this issue and it's record-breaking sales is proof of what I've always thought : BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL!!!
