We all know it's about the sequins, feathers, zippers, cutouts...basically great detailing...this year. Leila Shams seems to have found a way to combine all of these things in her first collection.
Leila Shams is an Iranian-American who after 10 years in the corporate fashion industry has turned to design. She has studied painting at the University of Maryland, and also at Parsons for fashion. Having always been criticized for being too over the top, she decided to exhibit that in her first collection, Spring 2010.
"My first collection is just that - all the stuff that in my former life was too bright, too expensive, too short, too sparkly, too edgy, too loud, too Leila. I was inspired by the 80s movie Weird Science and by the jungle."
Based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Leila's Spring 2010 collection exceeds all expectations of an indie line. Her most of her pieces have a no holds bar of shine that calls for night activities. Extra large zipper detailing on low back minis makes sure that you know this isn't your average party dress. Bright colors are also a part of the "look-at-me" attitude. The floor length lighting dress utilizes a black background for statement pattern and color.
My favorites are the black feather skirt and crop shirt. Although the full sequined tops are call to me almost at an equal volume.
