It's that time of the year again, when the Christmas lights are still shining in our windows, the Holiday dinners are still digesting, and our minds are set to make promises for the new year, usually involving healthier lifestyle and of course, the weigh-loss. In case you tried to avoid the sensitive subject this year, Oprah, the queen of lifestyle advice was here to remind it to all of us, not without another dramatic statement:
"I wanted to open up about something really deep going in my life," Oprah told to ET. "The January cover of O magazine is a very personal cover for me; I admit in that issue that I've not just fallen off the wagon, but during the past year I've been struggling really with my own health issues, which contributed to weight issues."
Phew, and I thought something "really deep" referred to the fact that Oprah puts herself on the cover of a magazine every month... In fact, her deep struggle is a common problem known as a thyroid dysfunction causing weight fluctuations. I can tell you first hand, it isn't the nicest of health problems (I've had it for about 20 years) but trust me it isn't the worst. It requires discipline, regular workouts, healthy diet habits - stuff you are supposed to do anyway.
Of course everything Oprah does involves national celebration, including the new weight loss campaign and few more experts to benefit from the cause by TV appearances and book sales. I hope Oprah keeps her 2009 resolution and gets back "on the wagon", although frankly her image doesn't change in my mind when she is 150 or 200 or 250 lbs. She is still Oprah for me and millions of her viewers.
My resolution for 2009 will be avoiding the latest diet trends, enjoying life and staying active by practicing yoga and occasionally running in the park. Not because an expert on TV told me so, but because I enjoy doing both and experienced their great benefit to both my body and mind.
