I know that a lot has been written on a surprisingly good performance by Jennifer Garner on Broadway, but I have to add my compliments. I had a pleasure seeing Cyrano de Bergerac last night and except enjoying the classic play again, I was fascinated by actors performances. Kevin Kline is just superb, and Jennifer Garner carried her role very well (although I have to say this wasn't one of the toughest roles an actress can get on stage). After watching many Hollywood celebrities having fiasco on Broadway, and despite few overacting moments here and there, Jennifer managed to captivate the audience with her performance on stage. Another good surprise was Daniel Sunjata (known from the fifth season premiere of Sex and the City where he played a Southern Navy boy that romances Sarah Jessica Parker).
The story itself is just so timeless and fresh, reminds me how much I love classic theater plays. There is some simple truth about many of them. Modern theater productions of these plays often make a fresh twist and add depth by adding special effects, dynamic decorations and new music arrangements to the "old-time" stories.
"Based on a true story, Cyrano de Bergerac is a classic tale of romance and tragedy. The soulful poet/philosopher and brilliant swordsman Cyrano (Kline), a cadet in the French Army, falls for the beautiful, strong-willed Roxane (Garner), but is too ashamed of his large nose to tell her. Instead, when he learns that she loves the handsome Christian de Neuvillette (Sunjata), his dim-witted comrade, he pens poetry and love letters to Roxane on Christian's behalf. After many years, the truth is revealed. Will love or beauty conquer all?"
Watch Cyrano on Broadway through beginning of January 2008
