NYC hipsters gathered at Brooklyn's McCarren pool last night to great their idol M.I.A., and the The Sri Lankan/British star didn't disappoint. Watching M.I.A. was similar to taking an illusion pill that makes colors more vibrant and sound beats more distinct.
The show started with a political statement projected on the large screen - a speech from an Asian man concerning the overthrow of a government. Then M.I.A. came out in a blond wig, tiara and funky green sequins mini dress, singing "Bamboo Banga".
The visuals were a true eye candy throughout the entire show and the energy level never went down, and almost exploded when M.I.A. called up on stage about 200 girls from the crowd, who danced with her for a couple of songs. At some point it looked like the show will have to stop because of a total mess on stage (people refused to leave), but somehow the security managed to fix things before it turned into a disaster. It was a show to watch!
Apparently I was one of the lucky fans who got to see her last show on this tour. In the middle of "People vs. Money" M.I.A. announced to the crowd that she is cancelling her European dates, leaving us wondering if it's because of the people or the money...
So fans in Spain, Norway, Ireland, UK, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Switzerland, Serbia, Germany and Belgium will have to find out what kind of political or social reasons stand behind M.I.A.'s decision to cancel the tour.
