Besides being extremely fascinating, seeing the photos from fashion weeks around the globe gives us a great perspective on different cultures and the ways they adopt current trends. Indonesian designers had some interesting approaches for mixing the modern with traditional to create new aesthetics.
Priyo Oktaviano really surprised me with the bold approach that could look edgy and fresh even on NY runways. The bold pieces in mostly black and nude colors mixed with patterns referenced Balenciaga in some ways. And indeed, the Indonesian designer spent 18 months with Balenciaga in Paris, mostly in the pattern making department in the early years of his career. Later he was offered to work with Alexander McQueen or Stella McCartney, but Priyo decided to return to Indonesia. Considering this most recent collection, he probably made the right choice. I'm sure the fashion world will hear this name more in the future.
