Academy of Art - New York Fashion Week - Spring Summer 200809/12/2007 07:24 PM | MinSun Lee looks
Recent grads from the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University San Francisco put their stamp on the New York fashion week this last Saturday. I was actually looking forward to this show, hoping it would be a nice break from the well-established sometimes too thought-through designer collections presented at the Bryant Park tents. As expected, the graduates delivered very fresh and creative show, just as you would expect from young emerging designers. Surprisingly, their collections were also cohesive and stood out each with their own individual style. 10 designers had a chance for their first impression, and while all designers created equally great visions, these stood out the most for me:
My favorite for the entire show - MinSun’s Knitwear collection. Blame it on my Russian heritage, but these looks, inspired by Russian Matryoshka dolls can't get out of my head. These are the most creative knitwear designs I've seen. I also loved the styling, accessorized by big matching helmets. It was simply distinguish and powerful collection.
Andrea Vence presented silhouettes based on Japanese kites. Among the most spectacular in the world, a traditional kite consists of a bamboo or wooden frame with paper painted in bold motifs from legendary war heroes to geometric patterns. Andrea’s textile designs were inspired by blown up images of basket and bamboo weaving. I liked her accessories pairing which added an interesting twist to the clothes. The prints were simply gorgeous.
Tara Shannahan has created a modern silhouette with the past in mind for her linen collection. She looked at the fracture and instability that the 1906 San Francisco earthquake caused and applied elements to the technical aspect of her designs. Her boldly draped white linen coats and dresses were skillfully structured and definitely made a statement.
Kenneth Ning showcased his rock star menswear collection featuring lots of patent leather looks painted in bold colors, which had luxury and sophistication, along with simple contemporary cuts.
Kyung Min has designed her own collection of simple shapes, which act like canvases for her textile work inspired by fairy tales from her childhood in South Korea. Lovely and fresh prints were certain attention grabbers.
Overall, the show was a great success both for the school and for the individual designers. It's very impressive that a design school puts so much effort to promote the students. With all the exposure fashion designers are getting these days thanks to shows like "Project Runway" and the ongoing celebrities support trend, it feels like design schools have to step up their game, and that’s what the Academy of Art does at the fashion week.
