I've spent the last hour trying to find something good to say about Nicholai - Nicky Hilton's new collection presented at New York Fashion Week last Sunday. I'm sorry to say that Nicky still needs to grow as a designer. I do believe she has lots of passion for design and realize how much work she puts in. Unlike her older sister Paris, who partied at the VMA's that night, Nicky was at the Bryant park tents making the last finishes for her own fashion line. The thing is it's not enough being able to put together a fashion show. Fashion is like a science where successful fashion lines have formulas that work and elements that proven to blend together. After seeing design visions from some of the biggest industry names during the last week, you could notice Nicky's mistakes without magnifying glass. Lets just start by saying that the clothes didn't fit well. If it can't fit well on a pretty skinny model, how can it survive the stores? She did try to jump on some trends, but it felt like running after high speed train. Capes and cropped jackets? Didn't we pass it last season?... Her short shorts couldn't be more obvious and swimwear couldn't be less flattering. I wouldn't go into further details, because I feel it's unfair for a young designer to be compared on the same scale as some of the tycoons presented at the same tent. Unfortunately Nicky has put herself in this position by making her talents showcase perhaps too early. The good thing is at 23 years old you have the time to fix mistakes, which I hope she does for the next fashion week.
