My family calls it an addiction, but for me it’s the only way to fully live and communicate. My constant connection to the digital world through various devices allows me to accomplish more than ever, without wasting time in between various events or travels. As I’m sitting here in Newark airport waiting for my flight to Cannes in France to take off, I’m surrounded by charging devices, which make my travel to different parts of the world much more entertaining and effective. They allow me to manage my virtual office 24/7 practically from anywhere.
First is the Samsung Saga – possibly the best phone Verizon offer at this point, with Windows operating system, instant access to any email provider (including Gmail), browser, GPS and Microsoft office. The combination of the touch screen with full QWERTY and option of a touch pen make it the winner for me (sorry iPhone…) All I do before international travels is activating the global phone and data package (pro-rated at about $2/day) and voile, I have my internet, email and global phone with me while abroad.
My second must have device is the 12” HP Pavilion TX2110 which is portable enough to fit in my handbag, and powerful enough to run all my software at once, including heavy graphics.
The third must have device is my Verizon Wireless mobile broadband card. It allows me to have guaranteed internet connection on my notebook anywhere in the US, including wild forests upstate NY and high ski mountains of Utah. It does come with a monthly fee, but I find it worth it every time I’m able to connect outdoors, without relying on local wireless networks around.
The fourth device is the universal adapter that allows all these gadgets and other electronic devices to charge from anywhere in the world while I travel.
Fifth and most obvious is of course an ipod – the only cure for airport and airplanes musical selection.
When I think about all these gadgets I wonder how people traveled 10 years ago, when none of these devices existed. Of course, they read more books, talked more with each other via actual phones and ahh… wrote each other long letters. While all these are obviously valuable things I won’t replace my gadgets with any of these, at least not when I travel the world.
