Yes, it's true that you probably can't save the world by yourself, or even the environment. But when you begin to read amazing stories of how much can be accomplished if everyone in the world picks their own way that is most comfortable to them to do their part...
So, here's my challenge - pick 3 things from this list that you can do TODAY to start making the world a better place. And, if you're up for it, pick a few more just for the fun of it:
1. Get REUSABLE GROCERY BAGS and start using them. Each person wastes over 500 plastic bags per year, and that's more than 32,000 bags over the average person's lifetime. It's not difficult - pick a design and style you like and just do it.
2. Turn lights off in rooms when you're not there. Make sure all nightlights are nightime activated so it senses to turn itself on only in low light conditions - or better yet, get a motion activated one so it's off unless you're up for a midnight trip to the bathroom or kitchen! Honestly, they cost $3-$10 at any home improvement store and save a ton of electricity over the course of a year.
3. Don't leave the fridge door open for 10 minutes while you make a sandwich. Tons of energy wasted... And, while you're at it, make sure to wipe the dirt/dust from the fridge vents twice a year to keep it running as efficiently as possible.
4. Ditto for the faucets and shower - NOBODY needs a 15 minute shower - even if you just got back from filming SURVIVOR - it's been proven that if you go at a comfortable pace, you can still efficiently shower and scrub every crevice of your body in less than 8 minutes - and girls, that INCLUDES washing your hair. This isn't the spa...
5. Change your lightbulbs to energy efficient ones. Once you see the clear light and pretty the room looks with the new lights, you won't want to go back to that sickly yellowish lightbulb anyway. Plus, you only have to change them like every 2 or 3 years, instead of 3 times a year.
6. Recycle. Pretty much every town in America offers a recycling program and a free bin - so why not use it? Quit tossing away newspapers and bottles when they can be recycled. It doesn't take you any more energy to toss it in the recycle bin versus the wastebasket, so why not do it? Look at it this way, if you wouldn't want it laying around in your backyard 50 years from now (where landfills will be spilling over at the current rate), then recycle it now, and put it to good use.
7. Buy RECYCLED when possible. There are so many cool products out there made from recycled goods - why not support the companies that are making the extra effort to do their part? Here are a few fun websites that have categories devoted to recycled or eco-friendly products - a fun place to buy gifts to help someone else pick their 3 little things, too!
