F.I.T. welcomed John Galanos, Doug Simms of the Simms Foundation, and fashion industry experts last night as they awarded the cream of their senior class crop.

Students were asked to create garments inspired by the designs of John Galanos.  The Simms Foundation donated 18 vintage gowns owned by 50's fashionista Marie B. Simms to F.I.T. and gave each student $75 towards materials and fabrics to get started.

The results were stunning.  Students' work was showcased in the center of the room as models wearing the donated gowns mingled amongst the crowd. 

It was amazing to see these impeccable vintage pieces first hand and imagine them as Marie would have worn them in the Flamingo Hotel in Vegas, 60 years ago in the company of greats like Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday!

Awards were given to the to student in each class, judged by a panel of fashion critics comprised of designers, F.I.T. alumni, and other seasoned fashion industry talents.

Higlights included speeches by John Galanos, F.I.T. President Joyce F. Brown, Douglas Simms. and Kelly Cutrone, head of Fashion PR firm People's Revolution.

Looking around the room, I felt inspired and slightly awe-struck.  The designers of tomorrow are hungry students with amazing ideas and fresh perspectives.  I can't wait to follow their careers and say, "I saw him/her back when..."

P.S. The event was formal and I was told that I looked very "Chanel."  La-dee-dah!
