Recently a model Naomi Campbell started a fight with fashion magazines who don't feature enough black models. She said even she "found it harder to get onto the coveted front cover as editors of magazines like Vogue consistently chose less prominent white models for news stand impact."
There is a truth in this statement - fashion magazines are not featuring enough of black models. Although I think it should refer to any women of color, not only black. Have you ever seen Asian models for example? Fashion world loves Eastern European beauties, and I do think they look beautiful, these blond fair skin girls. The problem is they represent only certain percent of women in this world. So why they are on the covers? Do they show the clothes better? I don't think so!
It feels like the magazine covers are featuring the editors personal taste, and that's what we get. I'm actually happy to see Naomi doing something important finally. She promised not to quit modeling until she finds that black models get equal prominence and recognition by the world media. We'll see if she wins this big fight and we get to see some world beauties on the covers.
“You can look through all the big magazines and see hundreds of models and not see a single black one,” she said. “So anything which increases the pool of African talent is a good thing, but it will be a while before we see a big change in the industry.”
