Blindness

For Christmas my boyfriend received the book Blindness by Jose Saramago from a close friend. Since then, we have both been craving to read the book, however, our busy lives have kept us away from it. A winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature, Blindness is set in a world that is suffering from an inexplicable outbreak of loss of sight.

I have tried to stay away from learning any more about the plot, only because I want to go into it expecting nothing. But the idea of a blind epidemic really catches my curiosity. I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose my eyesight, let alone have everyone around me in the same position. The book must surely take a hand in attempting to determine the possible ramifications of human nature in extreme crisis.

However,  my time to read the book is running out. Fernando Meirelles, acclaimed director of The Constant Gardener, is directing a film adaptation due out in mid-September. The film will star Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Gael García Bernal, and Sandra Oh. Without knowing anything about the characters of the novel, I am still pleased with the cast. I feel each individual is strong in their craft. Hopefully Saramago’s story will shine in this new light and be told true to its pages. I just want to make sure I read the book before I go see the movie!

Here is a glimpse of what to expect:

Wow, it looks like a really profound film! What a great cast and director! How exciting! That's so funny because I recently looked through the book at Borders! I should totally check it out! :)
