Letter to 16 year old Self
Letter to 16 year old Self

Hey Rohana,

Life sucks pretty badly right now, right? Your parents are so annoying, school is so annoying, life is just like a dark cloud hanging over your head on a rainy day and no one understands you. The whole point of life is a disaster waiting to happen, right? Wrong, sister! Way, Way,Way Wrong!!

Chick, look around you! A world of opportunities is knocking at your footsteps.  Danny, the hottest boy in high school, smiling at you should not be the very reason for your existence! I know you think he is, but look at all your other options. You’re beautiful and have a lot to offer to the world, and there are other people in your life who recognize and admire that quality in you.  Don’t believe me? Just ask Mike, Jack, Jimmy, Kevin, Eric, and/or Max.

Besides, boys will come and go. In fact, people will come and go, but one thing that will always be constant in your life is you. Duh, right?  Think of it this way, a wise person once said, “We enter the world alone, we die alone. So the only person who should matter in your life is you!”  What this person was saying is, you need to look out for yourself.  Prioritize your life. Do you first- everything else will fall in to place, I promise.

Danny will be BEGGING you for just ONE glance in his direction when you become successful, powerful, and downright THE BEST.  Besides, 5 years from now, I guarantee you will find out he is a total jerk and he won’t seem so hot anymore.  So, moral of the story: work hard, get in to a good college, and Land an awesomely Killer job, and I guarantee, as a result,  you will get the chance to party hard, date hotter boys, and live a fantastically fabulous and glamorous life.

You know that saying I was telling you a “wise person” once said?  Well, believe it or not, that was your mom who said it!  (Not so dumb now, is she?)  Let’s face it, parents will always be annoying (I think it’s a part of the job requirements), but try listening to them once in a while. You’d be surprised to find out that they only want what’s good for you, and whenever you fall (because trust me there’s a lot of falling (physically and emotionally and every way possible) that’s going to happen) these are the two people in the world who will be at your side, picking you up and dusting you off.  Don’t believe me? Go take a look at the home video form when you were 1.

Finally, just remember one thing: Whatever you do to avoid it, there will always be someone who is unhappy.  So, before you go about trying to keep the world happy, ask yourself whether you are happy, and if you are, keep things the way they are. Don’t settle for being satisfied, you must keep yourself happy. Satisfactory is never good enough, just know that.

Also, the next time Danny doesn’t smile at you, before your world comes crashing down on you, try and keep the bigger picture in mind.  There are people starving and homeless, struggling day in and day out to make ends meet by begging for food and getting abused more than a rabid animal, while their baby’s at home crying out of hunger and neglect. And you’re worried about some dude not smiling at you? Have some humility, girl! Come back to the real world, it misses you!  Count your blessings. Realize how lucky you are to be born to a family that cares, and that you have a roof over your head and some amazing food.  Appreciate what you have because you never know when it can be gone.

You are a beautiful, confident girl with a world of opportunities ahead of you. All you need to do is seize the opportunities, make the most of your life, and live your life with no regrets.  Show the world what makes Rohana Sengupta the best! Remember that always!

Love,

Your 22 year old self.
