Eco-fashion is about making clothes in a way that:

  • does not damage the environment
  • protects peoples health and well-being.

Eco-fashion designers choose to make clothes from:

  • recycled materials
  • reused textiles, for example second-hand clothes
  • organic raw materials, such as cotton grown without pesticides (pesticides can harm wildlife and get into the food we eat)
  • materials that haven?t been coloured with harmful chemicals and bleaches.

They also make sure that all their clothes are made under Fair Trade conditions. This means that the people who make them are paid a fair price and have good working conditions.

The Danish shop Earth AWear was one of the first eco-fashion shops in Europe . All of the products sold at Earth AWear are made from environmentally-friendly or recycled materials. For example, there are:

  • skirts made from pineapple fibres
  • fleeces made from organic cotton and recycled plastic bottles
  • belts made from bicycle tyres.

More and more companies have now followed Earth AWears example and are producing eco-fashion that is both attractive and kind to the environment.

But is it really "green" or is it like those so-called "green" lightbulbs they want us all to use that in the long term are MORE dangerous for the environment then the "energy wasters"? Is this regulated the way kosher goods are, or is it like organic where you only need one organic ingredient and the rest can all be non-organic? I'm sorry, I just don't trust that "eco-fashion" is what it claims to be. Not until I see strict laws governing it. Besides, like with the lightbulb example, many "eco-friendly" things are NOT eco-friendly in the LONG term. Take palm oil for example. People tout it as being eco-friendly and put it in makeup. Yet the LONG TERM effects of harvesting the trees to get it are doing major damage to the environment, so you're better off using stuff made in a lab. Like I said, just wondering if "green" fashion is REALLY in the LONG term green.

I'm such a fan of recycling I started an award-winning handbag line to put it "out there" myself! Reuse of components radically reduces the carbon footprint and as "one-of-a-kinds" everyone loves them. Check them out at www.dressedupcat.com Tracy Penwell Dressed Up Cat Fashion Re-fashioned
