It was the 50s. A time of bobby socks, innocence and black and white TV. A very young and impressionable child of mischief and curiousity, I remember vividly the moment I became aware of television. This ' idiot box' my parents liked to call it, captured my imagination and lead me into a world of wishful thinking. Watching this fairyland world of beautiful people, big cars and stylish clothes on an old Zenith in my folks bedroom would become the highlight of my little girl life...
It was where I imagined coming face to face with a young girl with short hair, big skirts and eyes wide with wonder. She was a simple girl who loved simple things. She loved animals and dressing in boys clothes.Oftentimes sad, this girl seemed to come alive when she sang and danced...They called her Gigi...I loved watching this girl with the funny sounding name, dance. lt would be many years and a bit of research before I learn that Ms. Caron' s father was French and her American mother, a dancer.
The iconic Leslie Caron made many movies over the years and with many famous men such as Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Cary Grant and Maurice Chevalier. Some of her most memorable movies included "An American In Paris" "Lilli" and of course, "Gigi."
Chocolat with Johnny Depp in 2000. Le Divorce in 2003 and an episode of Law and Order, Special Victims Unit, are some of her latest work. As a young girl of the 50' s and 60' s there were beautiful women I wanted to emulate and handsome men who made me want to grow up faster, however, it was the simplistic, forlorn beauty of Leslie Caron in the movie, Gigi, that caused a young girl to wish upon a star that could someday lead to this fairyland world that became known as Old Hollywood.
For me, it was Leslie Caron who brought beauty in black and white television and inside the workings of a little girl' s imaginings .
